The year is 1944. Thirteen-year-old Ofelia and her mother Carmen move to a small town due to the work of her stepfather, a cruel captain in the Francoist army whose mission is to quell republican resistance in the area. Ofelia discovers the ruins of a labyrinth and meets a faun with an extraordinary revelation for her: she is actually a princess, the last of her lineage, and her people have been awaiting her for a long time.
